The Battle of Ocracoke, 1718: Blackbeard’s Last Fight (EVM0066)

22 November 1718, a sandbank in North Carolina

Lieutenant Robert Maynard, sent by the Governor of Virginia, came into Ocracoke Inlet at dawn with two small sloops and no cannon. Blackbeard’s Adventure had up to eight guns and used them: the opening broadside killed or disabled close to a third of Maynard’s men before anyone had crossed a rail. Then Maynard hid the rest of his crew below decks, and the pirates boarded a ship that looked empty.

What the plate shows is the moment the trap closes

The men came up from below and the fight went hand to hand on a crowded deck. Blackbeard was shot five times and cut more than twenty before he went down, which is the detail every account keeps — not because it is heroic but because it was evidence: he was hard to kill, and they needed to be sure. He was beheaded, and the head was hung from the bowsprit for the return to Virginia. A pirate’s death had to be exhibited to count.

The career was fifteen months long

Edward Teach — the name is probably assumed — went from serving on a privateer to being the most feared man in the western Atlantic in about fifteen months, and was dead at the end of them. The famous pirates of the golden age almost all have careers this short. It is a trade with a very high failure rate and a very brief window, and the legend is built on a period of time shorter than a modern military tour.

The beard was a working tool

The black beard tied with ribbons, slow matches burning under his hat, pistols on bandoliers across his chest: this was assembled deliberately. A pirate makes money from ships that surrender without a fight — a fought-over prize is a damaged prize, and a dead crew cannot sail it into harbour. Terror was the cheapest weapon in the inventory, and Blackbeard invested in it more consciously than anyone.

The appearance was not vanity. It was an attempt to win boardings without having to fight them.

What it could not do

The method works against merchantmen who have a choice. It does not work against a naval officer with orders, which is what arrived at Ocracoke. Maynard was not calculating whether the cargo was worth the risk: he had been sent to end it, and a reputation is worth nothing against someone who has already decided.

Why this fight and not a famous capture

Rava has painted the end rather than the plunder, and it is the right choice for what a pirate actually was. ⚠️ The romantic version of piracy leaves out that it was suppressed quickly and deliberately once colonial governments decided the cost was intolerable — hangings in numbers, pardons offered and withdrawn, naval sweeps. The golden age lasted about a decade. The war that made these men — privateering in the War of the Spanish Succession — is the same world as EVM0060.
