The Battle of Guadalete and the end of Visigothic Spain, 711
In July 711 a force landed from Africa, largely Berber and led by Tariq ibn Ziyad, met the Visigothic army of King Roderic in the south of the Iberian peninsula. The battle — placed by the sources at the Guadalete or at the Janda lagoon, without agreement on the exact site — ended with the king’s death and the disintegration of his army. Within seven years almost all of Hispania had passed under Muslim control.
A kingdom that came apart from within
The speed of the collapse cannot be explained by the invaders’ military superiority: they numbered a few thousand. The Visigothic kingdom was in the middle of a dynastic crisis. Roderic had come to the throne recently and against the opposition of the sons of his predecessor Witiza, and Arabic and Christian sources agree that part of the nobility left the field during the battle. An elective and contested monarchy does not withstand an invasion.
The Visigothic army
Giuseppe Rava shows the Visigothic panoply of the early eighth century, a direct heir of the late Roman one: mail hauberk for the nobility, lamellar helmet, round shield, spatha and spear, with cavalry remaining the principal arm. This was not a backward army — it had fought for two centuries in Gaul and Spain — but it was organised around noble retinues, and therefore vulnerable to divisions among the nobles.
What followed
The conquest was not a replacement of population: Christian and Jewish communities remained, with legal statutes of their own, and the majority of conversions took place over generations. In the north some areas were never securely held, and it was from there that the Christian kingdoms of the long reconquest emerged.
