The Army That Shook Rome

Within months, Spartacus commands an army of 70,000 freed slaves, farm workers, and deserters. Moving through southern Italy, his forces defeat two Roman consular armies in rapid succession — a humiliation that sends shockwaves through the Senate. Spartacus proves himself a military genius: he uses the terrain of the Italian peninsula with extraordinary skill, avoids set-piece battles when disadvantageous, and keeps his diverse coalition fighting together through force of personality and tactical brilliance.

The Senate finally turns to Marcus Licinius Crassus, the wealthiest man in Rome, who uses his own fortune to equip eight new legions. After three years of war, Spartacus is cornered in Bruttium in 71 BC. He reportedly throws his horse to the ground before the final battle — a man who knows he will not need it again. His body is never found on the battlefield. Six thousand of his followers are crucified along the Appian Way from Capua to Rome.

Spartacus never sought to destroy Rome or abolish slavery — historical evidence suggests he aimed to lead his followers to freedom across the Alps. What he achieved was something Rome could not admit: for three years, slaves had made the Republic tremble.
