202 BC. The battle is lost. Hannibal Barca‘s veterans — men who had fought across Spain, crossed the Alps, annihilated Roman armies at the Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae — are breaking. The Carthaginian infantry of the third line, these survivors of Italy who had not lost a single engagement in fifteen years of campaigning, are now surrounded on the plain of Zama by the combined forces of Scipio Africanus and the Numidian king Masinissa.

The Last Carthaginian Warriors

These were not mercenaries or pressed men. Hannibal’s veterans had chosen to follow him back to Africa when Carthage recalled him to defend the homeland. They had watched their general deploy with consummate skill — using elephants to disrupt the Roman lines, placing his weakest troops forward to exhaust the Romans before committing the veterans. For a moment, when the Carthaginian cavalry rode down the Roman horse, it seemed as if the old magic might work one more time.

But Scipio had studied Hannibal as no Roman general before him. He had neutralized the elephants. He had matched Hannibal’s Numidians with his own. And when the Roman and allied cavalry — driven from the field at first — returned from pursuing the Carthaginian horse and struck Hannibal’s veterans in the rear, the trap was complete. The same double envelopment that Hannibal had used at Cannae was now being used against him.

The Carthaginian veterans formed a square and died fighting. Some accounts say Hannibal himself, watching from nearby, wept — not from cowardice but because he understood what he was seeing: the finest soldiers Carthage had ever produced, fighting with no hope of victory, unwilling to surrender. Their last stand at Zama ended not just a battle but an empire.
