Hannibal had crossed the Alps with 40,000 men and 37 war elephants, descended into Italy, and over sixteen years never lost a major battle. At Trebia, at Trasimene, and most devastatingly at Cannae in 216 BC — where he annihilated 70,000 Romans in a single afternoon with a double envelopment that military academies still study today — Hannibal proved himself the greatest battlefield commander of his age, perhaps of any age.

Against this colossus Rome sent a young general of 25 who had already shown extraordinary gifts in Spain. Scipio did not try to match Hannibal in Italy. Instead, he took the war to Africa — threatening Carthage itself and forcing Hannibal to abandon the Italian campaign he had waged for a decade and a half. At Zama in 202 BC, using Hannibal’s own tactics against him — the double envelopment — Scipio won the decisive victory that ended the war.

According to ancient sources, the two generals met before the battle for negotiations that failed. It was the only time they came face to face. After Zama, Hannibal reportedly told a friend that Scipio was the greatest general who had ever lived — greater even than Alexander the Great — because he had defeated Hannibal himself.
