The Goths’ Cavalry Returns to Adrianople: The Moment That Changed Everything

9 August 378 AD. The battle has been raging for hours when a sound changes everything — the thunder of hooves on the right flank of the Roman line. The Gothic heavy cavalry under Alatheus and Saphrax, which had been foraging in the hills miles away when the engagement began, has returned. What they see as they crest the ridge is an opportunity that a general in a thousand years of warfare might not see twice: the entire Roman left flank exposed, the Roman cavalry already engaged and beginning to break, the Roman infantry locked in a frontal struggle with the Visigoth wagons.

The Return That Decided a Century

The Gothic horsemen did not hesitate. They charged down from the hills and struck the exposed Roman left with the full weight of heavily armed cavalry — cataphractarii in scale and mail, fighting with lance and sword, their horses armored against the weapons of infantry. The Roman left cavalry collapsed almost immediately. The allied Hunnic and Alan horse who rode with the Goths swept around behind the Roman formation.

Now the Roman infantry — perhaps 30,000 men who had been pressing forward against the Visigoth laager — found themselves in a closing trap. The Visigoth infantry held them frontally while the Gothic cavalry rolled up both flanks and began pushing inward from behind. There was no room to maneuver, no room to use the pilum or the gladius effectively. Men died pressed against each other, unable to fight, unable to flee.

Emperor Valens died in the fighting. Two-thirds of the Eastern Roman field army — perhaps 20,000 men — died with him. The returning Gothic cavalry had been absent when the battle began; their return made it a catastrophe. It is among the most consequential cavalry charges in military history: the moment Rome lost its capacity to exclude the Germanic peoples, and the beginning of the end of the Western Empire.
