The Siege of Alesia, 52 BC: Caesar Against All of Gaul
Summer 52 BC. Julius Caesar faces the greatest crisis of the Gallic Wars. The brilliant Arverni chieftain Vercingetorix has united the tribes of Gaul in a last desperate uprising and retreated with 80,000 warriors into the fortified hilltop oppidum of Alesia, in what is now Burgundy, France. Rather than assault the near-impregnable position, Caesar makes a decision of breathtaking audacity: he will starve Alesia into submission — and hold off the entire Gallic relief army at the same time.
The Double Circumvallation: Engineering Against the World
Caesar’s legions construct two extraordinary lines of fortifications. The inner line — the circumvallation, 11 miles long — encircles Alesia completely, trapping Vercingetorix inside. The outer line — the contravallation, 14 miles long — faces outward, protecting the Roman besiegers from the relief force gathering outside. Caesar builds an entire fortress around a fortress, with his army sandwiched between two enemies.
When the Gallic relief force arrives — some 250,000 warriors according to ancient sources — the Romans face simultaneous attacks from outside and desperate sorties from within. At the decisive moment, Caesar himself leads a cavalry charge that breaks the Gallic encirclement. Vercingetorix, seeing the relief army routed, rides out the following day and throws his weapons at Caesar’s feet in surrender.
The fall of Alesia ends Gallic resistance. One million Gauls are said to have died in the war; another million enslaved. The conquest of Gaul doubles Roman territory and funds the civil war that will make Caesar master of Rome.
