Roman Legionary of the Marcomannic Wars: Soldier of a Philosophy

166-180 AD. The Marcomannic Wars — named for the Marcomanni tribe that led the coalition against Rome — were the defining military crisis of the reign of Marcus Aurelius, and one of the most significant military challenges Rome had faced since the first century. A vast confederation of Germanic and Sarmatian peoples broke through the Danube frontier in 166 AD, ravaged the Balkans and northeastern Italy, and forced Marcus Aurelius to spend most of his reign commanding the Roman response from the frontier camps of Pannonia and Noricum.

The Soldier Marcus Aurelius Relied On

The Roman legionary of the Marcomannic Wars was a different soldier from the legionary of the early Empire. His equipment had evolved: the lorica segmentata plate armor that is the popular image of the Roman soldier was already giving way to chain and scale armor more suitable for the cavalry-heavy warfare of the Danube frontier. His tactics had adapted to the Germanic way of fighting — not in organized formations but in swarms of individual warriors, fast-moving and aggressive, that required the Roman soldier to be more flexible and more individually capable than his predecessors.

Yet the core remained unchanged: the discipline, the training, the esprit de corps of the Roman legion. Marcus Aurelius — who famously compared governing to herding cats, and who wished he could return to his philosophy — trusted these soldiers with an empire. They did not disappoint him. The Marcomannic Wars ended in Roman victory, establishing the Danube as a secure frontier for another generation.
