Tuyutí, 24 May 1866: The Largest Battle in South American History

The Paraguayan War — fought from 1864 to 1870 by Paraguay against the Triple Alliance of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay — was the deadliest conflict in the history of Latin America, and Tuyutí was its largest single engagement. Roughly 50,000 men fought in a swamp on the Paraguayan side of the Paraná, and the day cost perhaps 13,000 casualties.

A War of Attrition in the Marshes

Marshal Francisco Solano López attacked the allied camp at Tuyutí with a four-column assault intended to catch the alliance before it consolidated. The ground defeated the plan: the columns lost contact crossing the marshes, arrived piecemeal, and were broken one after another by allied artillery firing over open sights. Paraguay lost around 6,000 dead and never regained the initiative.

The Cost

The war destroyed Paraguay as a functioning state. Estimates of its population loss vary widely and remain contested, but even conservative reconstructions put the death toll at a substantial fraction of the pre-war population, with the male population reduced catastrophically. The conflict fixed the borders of the region and left a demographic wound that shaped Paraguay for a century.

Giuseppe Rava’s Original Work

Giuseppe Rava reconstructs the combatants of Tuyutí from the surviving iconography: Paraguayan infantry in improvised uniforms and often barefoot, Brazilian regulars, Argentine and Uruguayan contingents, and the marsh terrain that decided the engagement.

This is a limited edition fine art print, hand-signed by the artist, produced in SRA3 format on fine art paper. Ships worldwide.
