Sturmpioniere — the men who opened the gap

Assault pioneers were not infantry in the ordinary sense. They were engineers, trained and equipped to solve one specific tactical problem: a fortified position cannot be taken by firing at it. Someone has to reach it and destroy it from a few metres away.

The problem they existed to solve

Bunkers, wire entanglements, minefields and dug-in strongpoints are built precisely to defeat the weapons an infantry squad carries. Rifle and machine-gun fire suppresses a position but does not remove it, and artillery can rarely be trusted to land close enough to friendly troops. The assault pioneer’s job was to cross the last two hundred metres and take the position apart by hand.

The tools of the trade

Wire was cut or blown with Bangalore torpedoes — pipe charges pushed forward in sections from cover. Bunkers were attacked with satchel charges placed against the embrasure or the door, or with flamethrowers, which did not need accuracy to make a position untenable. Mine clearing, demolition and bridging belonged to the same trade.

Why the losses were what they were

Every one of these methods required contact. The pioneer carrying a charge or a flamethrower was slow, visible and burdened, and he was the target the defenders most wanted to hit first. Assault pioneer units routinely suffered casualty rates well above those of the infantry for whom they were opening the way.

Engineers used as assault troops

The distinction matters: these were technical troops with engineering training, attached wherever a breakthrough was needed rather than holding a sector of their own. The role appears in every army of the war under different names, and it belongs to the history of field engineering rather than to that of any particular formation.
