The Swiss at prayer after Sempach, 1386

On 9 July 1386, near Sempach, the confederates faced the army of Leopold III of Habsburg. This time it was not an ambush but a frontal engagement, and it was far harder than Morgarten: the Habsburg knights dismounted and fought on foot in close order with long lances, presenting a wall of points to the confederate assault. The battle was decided only after hours, and Leopold III fell on the field along with much of the Austrian nobility.

The moment depicted

The painting does not show the fighting but what followed. The confederates’ prayer on the field after the victory is an episode handed down by the chronicles and absorbed into Swiss memory: men who had just killed a duke and hundreds of knights, kneeling among the bodies. It is worth seeing for what it is — a collective ritual after a day of violence, not a devotional image.

The Winkelried legend

Tradition credits the breakthrough to Arnold von Winkelried, said to have thrown himself onto the enemy lances and gathered them into his body to open a gap for his comrades. The figure appears only in sources written more than a century later, and Swiss historians now regard him as a narrative construction. Contemporary chronicles describe more simply a progressive collapse of the Austrian wing.

Consequences

Sempach, followed by Näfels in 1388, ended Habsburg attempts to recover control of the region. From then on confederate infantry became a force in demand across Europe: over the following century Swiss mercenaries fought in Italy, France and Burgundy, and were long considered the finest infantry on the continent.
