Before Troy: The Siege That Founded Western Literature

For ten years the Achaean host camps on the shore below the walls of Ilios. Their ships are drawn up on the beach, their fires burn along the plain of the Scamander, and beyond the ditch rises the city that will not fall. The Trojan War is the oldest story the West tells about itself — the subject of the Iliad, the starting point of Greek epic, and the moment when a Bronze Age raid became myth.

The Armies Before the Walls

The warriors who fought before Troy belong to the Late Bronze Age, not to the classical Greece of the hoplite. Homer’s fighters carry the great body-shield, the boar’s-tusk helmet, the bronze-headed thrusting spear. They fight from chariots and dismount to duel. Archaeology at Hisarlik in north-western Anatolia has confirmed a substantial fortified citadel destroyed by violence in the twelfth century BC, and the Hittite archives name a western kingdom, Wilusa, that most scholars identify with Homer’s Ilios.

Achilles, Hector and the Logic of Honour

The Iliad is not a chronicle of the war but the account of a quarrel within it. Achilles withdraws from the fighting over an insult to his honour, and the Achaeans are driven back to their ships. Only the death of Patroclus brings him back, and his return leads to the duel with Hector beneath the walls — the scene that has fixed the war in the Western imagination for nearly three thousand years.

The Fall

The city fell, in the tradition, not to force but to deception: the wooden horse, the feigned withdrawal, the night attack from within. Whatever historical event lies beneath the story, the destruction of Troy VIIa marks the end of an age. Within a century the Mycenaean palaces themselves had burned, the Bronze Age world of the eastern Mediterranean had collapsed, and Greece entered four centuries of silence before Homer gave the war its permanent form.

Giuseppe Rava reconstructs the plain before Troy with the equipment the period actually used: the figure-of-eight shield, the bronze greaves and cuirass known from the Dendra panoply, the long ashen spear, the chariot as a battlefield transport rather than a fighting platform. The result restores the Homeric scene to its Bronze Age setting rather than dressing it in later classical armour.
