March 17, 45 BC. On the plains of Munda in southern Hispania, Julius Caesar faces the last serious military challenge of his career. Opposing him are the sons of Pompey the Great — Gnaeus Pompey the Younger and Sextus Pompey — commanding an army of thirteen legions reinforced by Numidian cavalry and local auxiliaries. It is the final act of the Roman Civil War.

Caesar’s army of eight veteran legions advances uphill across open ground under a merciless Iberian sun. The battle reaches a critical moment when Caesar, seeing his right flank beginning to waver, personally rides to the front line to steady his men — a gesture that turns the tide. The Pompeian forces break; the pursuit is relentless and devastating. Over 30,000 soldiers die on the field. Gnaeus Pompey flees but is hunted down and killed weeks later. Only Sextus escapes, to fight another day.

Munda effectively ends organized Republican resistance to Caesar’s rule. Within a year, Caesar will be assassinated on the Ides of March — but on the plains of Munda, he stands at the absolute apex of his military career, having fought and won a civil war that reshaped the Roman world.
