He instructed them to use their pila not in the usual overhead throw against infantry shields, but as thrusting spears aimed at the faces of Pompey’s cavalry — a tactic that broke the cavalry charge and allowed Caesar’s own horse to sweep around the Pompeian left. The battle was won by the Tenth’s improvisation under Caesar’s specific direction.
