Estero Bellaco, 2 May 1866: The Attack Before Tuyutí

Three weeks before the great battle at Tuyutí, a Paraguayan force struck the allied vanguard at Estero Bellaco in a surprise attack across a marsh the allies had considered impassable. It was a small action by the standards of the war and it set the pattern for everything that followed.

Surprise and Recoil

Around 4,500 Paraguayans fell on Uruguayan and Argentine advance units at midday, overrunning the forward camps and capturing several guns. The initial success was complete. But the attacking columns halted to plunder the camps, allied reserves came up, and the Paraguayans were driven back across the marsh having lost roughly 2,300 men against about 1,500 allied casualties.

Why It Mattered

Estero Bellaco showed both sides what the campaign would be: Paraguayan attacks that achieved local surprise but could not be sustained, against an alliance that absorbed losses and kept coming. Solano López drew the wrong lesson and ordered the far larger assault at Tuyutí three weeks later, with the same outcome on a bigger scale.

Giuseppe Rava’s Original Work

Giuseppe Rava reconstructs the combatants from the surviving iconography of the war — Paraguayan infantry, Uruguayan and Argentine troops, and the marshland that shaped every engagement of the campaign.

This is a limited edition fine art print, hand-signed by the artist, produced in SRA3 format on fine art paper. Ships worldwide.
