Ave Caesar: The Roman Triumph and the Glory of the Legions
For seven centuries, the cry of Ave Caesar! — or, in earlier times, Io Triumphe! — rang through the streets of Rome as victorious generals returned from campaign. The Roman Triumph was the highest honour the Republic and later the Empire could bestow: a solemn procession through the Eternal City, from the Campus Martius through the Forum to the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill.
The Roman Legionary: Backbone of an Empire
Behind every Triumph stood the Roman legionary — the most professional and effective soldier the ancient world had ever produced. Equipped with the iconic lorica segmentata or lorica hamata, the short stabbing sword gladius, the heavy throwing spear pilum, and the large rectangular shield scutum, the legionary was the product of relentless training and iron discipline. In tight formation, the Roman legion was nearly unbeatable in open battle.
The legionary served twenty-five years, fought across three continents, and built roads, bridges and fortifications that still stand today. He was simultaneously soldier, engineer, and administrator — the human instrument through which Rome transformed the ancient world. It was his courage, endurance, and loyalty that turned a city-state on the Tiber into an empire stretching from Scotland to Mesopotamia.
