The Macedonian Wars: Rome’s Conquest of the Greek World

Between 214 and 148 BC, Rome fought four wars against Macedon — the kingdom of Philip II and Alexander the Great — that ended with the destruction of the Macedonian monarchy and the reduction of Greece to a Roman province. These wars transformed Rome from an Italian power into a Mediterranean empire and brought the full legacy of Greek civilization under Roman dominance.

The Clash of Two Military Systems

The Macedonian Wars were, in military terms, a clash between two revolutionary systems: the Macedonian phalanx — sixteen ranks of pikemen armed with the sarissa, an 18-foot spear that created an impenetrable wall of iron points — and the Roman manipular legion, whose tactical flexibility allowed it to operate on broken ground where the phalanx was vulnerable.

The decisive engagement was the Battle of Cynoscephalae in 197 BC, where Roman consul Flamininus caught the Macedonian phalanx on uneven ground. The right wing of the phalanx, still forming up on a ridge, was caught in disorder by the Roman legions, which — abandoning formation — attacked from the flank. A Roman tribune took twenty maniples on his own initiative and struck the Macedonian left in the rear. The phalanx, unstoppable from the front, was helpless once it lost cohesion. Philip V’s army dissolved.

At Pydna in 168 BC, the pattern repeated: Perseus of Macedon’s phalanx initially drove back the Roman legions, but the rough ground broke its formation, creating gaps that the Roman soldiers exploited with gladius and scutum. Perseus fled; Macedon was dismembered. The Greek historian Polybius — who witnessed Pydna — wrote that it demonstrated conclusively the superiority of the Roman system over the phalanx in all but ideal terrain.
