The Legionaries of Crassus at Carrhae: The Men Who Marched into the Arrows

They were veterans of Rome’s most professional army — men who had trained for years with pilum and gladius, who had built roads and camps and fortifications across the Roman world, who trusted in their formation, their discipline, and each other. On the dusty plains outside Carrhae in 53 BC, the legionaries of Marcus Licinius Crassus faced something for which their training had not prepared them: an enemy who would not close.

Standing Under the Arrows

The Roman legionary’s tactical system was built around two moments: the volley of pila at close range that disrupted the enemy formation, and the immediate follow-up charge with the gladius that drove the sword home before the enemy could recover. This system required the enemy to stand and fight — to present a mass of men within javelin range. The Parthian horse archers of Surena refused this invitation entirely.

What the men of Crassus experienced was something qualitatively different from any battle Rome had previously fought: hours of standing under arrow fire with no ability to reply, watching their comrades fall, unable to advance fast enough to close, unable to retreat without breaking formation and being ridden down. Their shields were full of arrows; their ranks thinned hour by hour. The centurions kept order; the aquiliferi kept the standards upright; the men kept their places in the line. It was courage of a particularly Roman kind — not the wild bravery of a single charge, but the grinding endurance of men who stood because they were Roman soldiers and that was what Roman soldiers did.

Of the seven legions that followed Crassus into Mesopotamia, perhaps four were effectively destroyed at Carrhae and in the retreat. The survivors — some 10,000 men — were settled by the Parthians deep in Central Asia, near modern Merv. Ancient sources, and some modern scholars, have speculated that some of these men may have eventually served the Han dynasty in China — the most extraordinary odyssey any Roman soldiers ever made.
