The Trap Scipio Set

Scipio’s solution was elegant and devastating. Rather than forming his maniples in the traditional checkerboard pattern that offered no clear passage, he arranged them in straight lines with wide lanes between each unit — corridors running directly back through the Roman formation. When the elephants charged, the Roman soldiers simply stepped aside, channeling the beasts down these lanes where they were harassed by javelin fire but could not reach the fighting men.

The result was catastrophic for Carthage. Many elephants, maddened by wounds and the noise of Roman trumpets and shouting, turned back into their own lines — stampeding through Hannibal’s Numidian and Spanish cavalry on the wings, throwing them into chaos at the precise moment the allied Numidian cavalry under Masinissa needed to engage them. The Carthaginian cavalry was swept from the field before the infantry battle had fairly begun.

The rout of the elephants was not Hannibal’s only setback at Zama, but it was the first and perhaps most psychologically significant. The weapon that had made him seem invincible was turned against him by the very general who had studied his methods most carefully.
